I know from personal experience just how challenging it is to stop smoking. I smoked during my late teens and when I wanted to stop, it was a continuous struggle to keep control and I relapsed often. I remember feeling so frustrated with myself.
As a practicing acupuncturist many years later, I found it to be extremely effective for assisting patients through nicotine withdrawal to become nicotine free. I was, however, surprised by how many patients were relapsing weeks, months or even years after becoming nicotine free. To my astonishment, I found that there were very few interventions:
- allowing for the transition
- addressing the habits surrounding smoking
- addressing the strong assumptions, beliefs and attitudes towards smoking, and
- assisting the individual through physical withdrawal
My subsequent research established a number of effective therapies which address these issues in tandem and these therapies have been integrated into the Quittingpoint Programme.
